Venus Williams, Awarded Wild Card for First Melbourne Major in Five Years.
A seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has been granted a special invitation for the first Grand Slam of the year, commencing on January 18 in Melbourne.
Historic Return to Melbourne Park
Tournament officials confirmed on Friday that the 45-year-old icon will grace the courts again at the tournament venue a staggering 28 years after her debut. Back in 1998, she overcame her sibling Serena in the early stage before bowing out in the last eight to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.
Preparing for the Summer Swing
Venus had earlier stated in November her intention to compete in Auckland, New Zealand, where she also received a wild card, two weeks prior to the Melbourne event. Organizers added that Williams is also entered to participate in Australia's Hobart International a week later, just before the start of play at Melbourne Park.
Her most recent visit in the city was in 2021, and she has been a finalist in the women’s singles on two separate instances, losing to Serena in the championship matches of 2003 as well as 2017.
"I’m excited to be back in Australia and looking forward to competing during the Australian summer," Venus stated. "I have experienced so many unforgettable memories there, and I’m thankful for the opportunity to return to a venue that has meant so much to my career."

Williams' career statistics at Melbourne Park stands at an impressive 54 victories and 21 defeats. The upcoming edition will mark the 22nd time she has competed in the primary tournament field.
Setting a New Record
The tournament pointed out that Williams is set to become the oldest woman to take part in an Open's main draw, surpassing the record formerly set by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she lost in the opening round at the venue in 2015.

In late December, Williams wed Denmark-born model and actor Andrea Preti in Palm Beach, Florida.
