Users Discontinuing Slimming Injections Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets
Fresh analysis indicates that people who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People purchasing such drugs should be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a return to original mass within about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually see a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Experts propose the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the accelerated regain.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this medication means appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."
An Ongoing Disease?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Experiences
Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a intense return of appetite.
"It was like a switch activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if users have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated lifestyle changes.
