The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Track
This latest animated series, the newest animated adventure by Critical Role, unveiled an exciting opening credits. It showcases our favorite group of outcasts, outcasts, and criminals kicking ass and making their mark, while teasing at several heart-wrenching backstories for key figures including Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, the character Fjord.
All in all, the opening appears amazing. However, I felt that an element was lost in the music selection.
This sequence employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition composed by producer and singer the talented musician. It's a track from the official score of that title, the second release released by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division their music brand. It's a great nostalgic choice, and I suspect that fans of the sequel series will love its inclusion.
But for me, The series' intro fails to capture the excitement and energy that was part of the second campaign's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", written by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit in my view when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it only got better when cast member Sam Riegel wrote words to the melody for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Featuring vocals from one actress, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the track was catchy and fun. At the time, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my phone. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you start an episode of adventurous fun.
The Mighty Nein's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the right notes in my opinion. It's an impressive piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.
Naturally, Critical Role has already said that the series will have some changes and variations from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its intro seems to be among these.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on the streaming service from November 19. For those eager until then, or want a head start to learn about the characters of the second series, the original episodes are available on the audio platform and the video site.
