Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect responsible for a series of unforgettable images favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.

Price was best known for his defined forms and dramatic aesthetics, such as the light-hued ensembles that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."

This news arrives just weeks after he unveiled his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "dress" once worn by the late Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.

He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to blend tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in crafting sculptural silhouettes made him a "genuine original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he commenced designing pieces for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included various looks for her tour of the United States following her marriage.

After a career spanning more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Theatrical Flair: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The fashion world mourns the loss to a genuine innovator whose influence on the visual landscape of music remains profoundly felt.
