The Actress Fiona Shaw Discusses Her Professional Journey: From Andor to Harry Potter

During a recent conversation, renowned actress Fiona Shaw shared insights about her diverse career covering multiple decades and memorable characters.

The Impactful Andor Monologue

When discussing her unforgettable eulogy scene in the Disney+ show Andor, Shaw disclosed that the initial version contained more explicit wording. "I did say a different word in my speech," she explained, "and the writer wanted the studio would approve it."

The performer described the unique filming conditions for this specific moment. "While I delivered that speech, I was filmed by about 200 cameras to create a hologram. I was entirely by myself in a massive studio, with neither director nor crew members there with me."

Jane Austen Adaptations

Speaking about the forthcoming screen version of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility, Shaw expressed excitement about finishing production. "We recently completed shooting it," she stated, "and what an actor typically doesn't see is the completed movie."

She praised filmmaker Georgia Oakley as "truly wonderful and very assured." The filming took place in beautiful estates across the UK, including sites within Dorset, Knebworth, and Devonshire.

The actress also recalled on her earlier performance in the 1995 adaptation of Austen's Persuasion, playing Mrs. Croft. "The director had specific requirements: without hairpieces and just candle illumination," she remembered. "He truly aimed to recreate the feeling of early 19th century life."

Wizarding World Reflections

In response to questions regarding her experience with the wizarding film series, Shaw spoke fondly about collaborating with her departed co-star. "He represented the most elegant, artistic and talented man," she shared. "He had the most beautiful penmanship and on one occasion mailed me a note inviting me to lunch in ornate gothic script."

The actress portrayed Griffiths as continuously talking and telling interesting stories with herself and the young actors on set. "He had remarkable worldly understanding so we would sit enthralled by his tales."

Stage Performances

Discussing her New York stage role in Medea, Shaw recalled how psychologically challenging the show was. "I met one of the chorus members several years after, who said: 'I'm not over it yet,'" she disclosed.

This theatrical work had an extensive run, beginning in Ireland, then moving to London, followed by the American capital, the New York venue, and finally Broadway. "We grew quite bonded as a cast," she noted.

Performance Philosophy

Regarding inquiries concerning her ability to transition between comedy and drama, Shaw explained that "comedy connects us as it's about breaking conventions." Nevertheless, she confessed that "prior to a comedy, I always rest badly, because you have to find the rhythm on the day."

Regarding her method for approaching various roles, Shaw stated: "I discover each one difficult. But even if the character you're portraying is quite distant from you, there is frequently some aspect about them that you recognize."

Current Projects

Discussing her latest role in the production Hot Milk, Shaw characterized her character Rose as "a terrible woman but you can't play anything from that viewpoint." She explained that Rose suffers from a nervous system condition that makes walking difficult.

"She is unaware of the impact she has on her daughter," Shaw observed. "All she knows is that she desires to get better. She's both benign and blind. Maybe this represents what many people resemble."

Personal Reflections

When told that viewers consider her ideal as authority figure characters, Shaw responded with amusement: "Goodness me! I'm so not scary. But perhaps when filled with purpose, my features can appear formidable."

She added: "In reality occasionally rather disorganized so maybe it's redemptive for me to play highly intellectual, methodical personalities. I try to portray interesting people so I never judge them. Please don't fear – come and say hello!"

Love for Language

Discussing her celebrated interpretation of the poetic work The Waste Land, Shaw conveyed her deep connection with language and poetry. "My heart is always in the language," she stated, "because the clues to everything are there in the selection of vocabulary."

The actress thinks that "poetry represents the refined version of language, or the moment that has been captured." As individuals reduce to what they genuinely wish to express, it's often poetic."

Audiobook Work

Regarding her acclaimed audiobook performances, specifically the classic Alice in Wonderland, Shaw revealed that "I loved reading Alice in Wonderland because I incorporated everybody I knew into it – my friends and fellow performers."

The actress explained how she performed the caterpillar as channeling Alan Rickman, and characterized the Red Queen as reminiscent of Geraldine McEwan. "It consistently feels a privilege to sit and speak literature," she concluded, "despite needing extended periods of work."

Collaborating with the Director

Remembering her time working with celebrated filmmaker Terrence Malick on his film Tree of Life, Shaw described him as unconventional. "All that the director expresses and undertakes is unique," she observed.

She shared a specific recollection of their initial encounter: "He placed a message on my answering machine which said, 'I wonder, would you come and help with my film?' We went out for breakfast. He said, 'Well, what are you going to have?' I said, 'I'm going to have scrambled eggs.' He said, 'I think I'll have scrambled eggs too,' like it was the most unusual selection in the world."

The actress also described Malick's unusual approach of asking actors "Do you want to do this scene inside or outside?" – inquiries seldom made by other filmmakers. "He exclusively used natural light," she added, "so you could either perform interior near glass or exterior on location."

Regarding the lengthy post-production, Shaw disclosed that "The director requires about three years to edit the film. I had been told by the producer following twenty-four months that I was probably one of the primary roles, but when the film came out, I was nearly gone."

She concluded by describing Malick's distinctive approach: "He builds this enormous structure, and he removes most elements. He fundamentally dismantles films."
