Recent Drugs Celebrated as a 'Pivotal Moment' in Combating Drug-Resistant Gonorrhoea

The first new treatments for gonorrhoea in decades are being viewed as a "huge turning point" in the battle against drug-resistant strains of the bacteria, according to scientists.

An International Health Concern

Cases of gonorrhoea are on the rise globally, with estimates suggesting more than 82 million infections annually. Particularly high rates are observed in the African continent and countries within the World Health Organization's designated area, which encompasses Mongolia and China to New Zealand. Within England, cases have hit a historical peak, while figures across Europe in 2023 were three times higher compared to the rates from 2014.

“The approval of novel therapies for gonorrhoea is an important and timely development in the context of growing infection rates, the spread of superbugs and the very limited available drugs presently on offer.”

Health officials are increasingly worried about the increase in antibiotic-resistant strains. The World Health Organization has designated it as a "priority pathogen". Recent surveillance showed that resistance to primary antibiotics like ceftriaxone and cefixime jumped significantly between 2022 and 2024.

A Pair of Novel Therapies Secure Approval

One new antibiotic, also known as Nuzolvence, was authorized by the American regulatory agency in December for treating gonorrhoea. This disease can lead to major issues, including infertility. Experts hope that specific application of this new drug will help hinder the development of resistance.

Gepotidacin, developed by the drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline, also received approval in concurrent days. This drug, which is employed against urinary tract infections, was demonstrated in studies to be successful in treating superbug versions of the gonorrhoea bacteria.

A Unique Development Model

This new treatment emerged from a new, not-for-profit approach for antibiotic development. The non-profit organisation GARDP worked alongside the drug firm its industry partner to see it through.

“This milestone represents a huge turning point in the management of highly resistant gonorrhoea, which up to this point has been outpacing our drug pipeline.”

Research Study Outcomes and Global Access

Based on results released by a prominent scientific publication, zoliflodacin eradicated the vast majority of genital gonorrhoea infections. This puts it on an similar efficacy with the existing first-line therapy, which combines an injection and a pill. The trial enrolled nearly 1,000 volunteers from various regions including Belgium, the Netherlands, South Africa, Thailand and the US.

Under the terms of its unique model, the non-profit has the ability to license and sell the drug in a wide range of developing nations.

Doctors treating patients have voiced positive views. Access to a single-dose, oral treatment like this is described as a "game-changer" for public health efforts. This is deemed vital to alleviate the strain of the infection for patients and to halt the transmission of extremely resistant gonorrhoea worldwide.
