In excess of 20 Olympic champions, mentors and other world-class competitors have signed a statement urging a halt to the death penalty of a boxing titleholder and coach, who is facing execution in the country.

Growing International Outrage

Amidst growing global condemnation over the country's escalating use of executions as a tool of suppression, the strongly worded statement censures the government's ruling to maintain the death sentence of the athlete.

Vafaei Sani, three decades old, from the city in north-east Iran, was taken into custody for participating in nationwide protests in two thousand nineteen and accused of aiding an opposition group. He has endured half a decade in incarceration, where he has been mistreated and confined in solitary confinement.

“Competition is designed to promote hope, togetherness, and fortitude,” the endorsers expressed. “The execution of a winner for his opinions is a direct assault on these values and a admonition to any competitor who attempts to speak out.

History of Putting to Death Competitors

The statement pointed out that the athlete's situation was not unique and underscored Iran’s history of sentencing to death competitors for their views, including a football captain, skipper of the soccer squad, and a women's sports leader, leader of the women's volleyball squad. In 2020, an athlete, a 27-year-old Iranian wrestling champion, was put to death.

Further supporters to the statement include a sailing champion, who led the pioneering female-only team in a international sailing event and was the first woman to receive a renowned yachting trophy; the ex- skipper of the national squad Craig Foster; and Bahram Mavaddat, who was in the national team for the global tournament.

Apprehension and Unjust Proceedings

The athlete was taken into custody in the spring of 2020. The allegations against him comprised “promoting decay on Earth through incendiarism and damage of public property”. His sentence has been annulled on two occasions but on 4 October it was upheld on the latest review. His court case was condemned as “grossly unfair” by human rights activists and organizations.

Urging to United Nations

The appeal to halt the athlete's execution comes after a earlier appeal to the global human rights chief for human rights, signed by more than a hundred human rights experts and organizations, urging measures to stop the athlete’s capital punishment.

Capital Punishment Escalation

Based on findings, there is an “death penalty surge in Iran, which has attained alarming levels”. In 2023, officials sentenced at least eight hundred fifty-three people – a 48% surge on 2022. The year before, data showed 972 capital punishments, marking the peak figure since the year 2015. More than eight hundred people have been sentenced so far in the current year.

Political prisoners and dissidents are focus, especially in the aftermath of the 2022's uprising. Specialists say the regime have used the death penalty to quell protest, create apprehension among the public and tighten their control on authority.
