Line of Duty Announced for 7th Series on the British Broadcaster
The acclaimed crime series AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th season, confirmed by the broadcaster.
A brand new six-episode season written by the show's creator starts production in Northern Ireland in the coming months, as confirmed by the production team.
The actress shared her enthusiasm about the return, saying she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Her co-star added, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together soon."
The previous series concluded in 2021 with a final episode that drew in over 17 million viewers. Rumors about a potential return have been widespread ever since, but confirmation only came this week.
Fresh Obstacles for The Team
The seventh season will open with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by the announcement.
Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain working to tackle corruption within the law enforcement.
Their work "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, these officers will take on their "most sensitive case to date."
New Character and Complex Case
An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer celebrated for takedowns of criminal networks, faces allegations of misusing his authority to act as a sexual predator.
Yet, this investigation could be a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still active in the shadows, plot details suggested.
In a statement, Jed Mercurio commented: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."
"We're privileged to have had so many followers track the ups and downs of AC-12 over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a new installment."
He added: "Corruption in the UK is supposed to have ended while the series was not airing, so I've been forced to use my creativity."
Cast Reactions
Martin Compston described being part of the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".
"Not only the program's popularity but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."
"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he added.
Vicky McClure stated: "Obviously I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Eager to work with the creator, Martin and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"
The veteran actor noted: "As we count down the unit days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be working together soon."
"Delighted with the announcement and anticipating those unexpected plot developments."
Series Legacy
The drama launched in 2012 and evolved into one of the most popular television series of the last decade, featuring notable actors such as Kelly Macdonald.
Broadcasters has not yet announced exactly the new season will premiere.
The conclusion of season six drew the long-running storyline about the hunt for kingpin known as "H" to a close, and the creative team indicated at the moment there were no plans for additional seasons.
However, the corporation confirmed on Tuesday that a seventh series is now being produced.
