Gus Atkinson increased England's injury problems upon exiting the field on the second morning in the Melbourne Test against Australia.
Atkinson experienced discomfort in his left leg immediately following a delivery of the fourth over on Saturday.
The England team indicated the 27-year-old reported "discomfort" and would spend time away from the action to undergo evaluation "over the next few hours".
The concluding match of the series in Sydney starts on Sunday, 4 January.
The visitors have been without fast bowlers Mark Wood to a knee injury and another paceman with an abdominal strain on the current trip.
Matthew Fisher was added to the party to provide backup.
