Eric Adams Will Support Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayoral Race
NYC's current mayor Eric Adams has announced his decision to back former Governor Cuomo in the upcoming mayoral race, even after an extended period of strained relations between the two Democratic figures.
A Surprising Reversal After Previous Accusations
Only weeks ago, the mayor had lashed out at Cuomo, calling him a “snake and a liar” and alleging of having “a career of marginalizing Black political contenders.” Nonetheless, in a new development, Adams made a U-turn, announcing he now intends to appear with the former governor in areas where he holds significant backing.
“It is crucial to mobilize the Black and brown communities that have experienced urban displacement on how vital this race is,” Adams stated.
He added, “They have watched their rents increase in terms of neighborhood changes and they have been disregarded in those neighborhoods, and I’m going to go to those neighborhoods and talk directly with community leaders and groups and I’m going to walk with the governor in those areas and get them engaged.”
Race Dynamics and Current Developments
The mayoral contest has so far been shaped by the competition between the former governor and progressive candidate his main rival, whose rise in the polls has made headlines worldwide and represented aspirations for a revitalized leftwing of the Democrats.
In a latest candidate forum, both the democratic socialist and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa stated they would decline Adams’s endorsement if extended.
Earlier this year, Adams had begun his bid for another term as an unaffiliated candidate after being indicted on legal accusations which were later dropped in return for his assistance with government enforcement actions across the city.
During a unrelated press conference on Thursday, the mayor responded to journalists asking about the support announcement by stating, “I'm meeting Andrew later today.”
The announcement came a day after the two politicians were seen attending a game side-by-side at the the NBA team's season opener at the famous arena, which took place immediately following a heated mayoral debate.
