A comprehensive search and rescue effort is actively ongoing in the Caribbean region for two missing boats transporting humanitarian supplies journeying from the Mexican coast to Havana.

Naval Search and Rescue Missions Deployed

Mexico has deployed navy personnel and military search aircraft to search for the two vessels, which were transporting no fewer than nine crew members, according to a military release.

The boats had been projected to reach the Cuban capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and zero verification of their safe arrival, authorities reported.

Context of Aid to Cuba

The Caribbean nation has depended significantly on aid convoys from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the country endures widespread power outages across the country.

"The crews and captains are seasoned mariners, and both vessels are fitted with suitable safety equipment and signalling equipment," a spokesperson involved in the effort said.

The nine crew members are citizens of France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Mexican authorities said it has been in touch with rescue coordination centers from each country along with their embassy officials.

"Our team is working closely with the authorities and continue to be hopeful in the crews' ability to reach Havana safely," the spokesperson added.

Recent Relief Delivery

Earlier in the week, the Cuban authorities publicly celebrated and officially received a separate vessel that had carried a significant amount of humanitarian aid to the country.

That vessel, dubbed "a modern Granma" in reference to the yacht in which the revolutionary leader landed in Cuba to launch the Cuban Revolution in the mid-20th century, brought solar equipment, pharmaceuticals, infant formula, bikes and provisions.

Wider International Context

Charity groups and individuals have largely spearheaded efforts to deliver essential supplies to Cuba beginning in January, when a oil sanctions on the Communist-run nation began.

International organizations have since warned of "dire" lack of essential goods, with over 50k surgeries cancelled in Cuba due to energy rationing.

Political pressure have increased in recent months, with remarks from various officials underscoring the complicated situation regarding bilateral relations.

Responding to previous statements, a prominent Cuban official stated firmly that "the political system of Cuba is non-negotiable."

Indications suggest that preliminary steps of negotiations commenced, although their present status remains unclear.

The naval forces stated it was dedicated to using the full extent of its capabilities at its command to discover the vessels and secure the safety of the sailors.

As of now, there has been no public statement on the missing boats by the Cuban government.
